NYCEDC Pier 42 Upland Park

The Pier 42 project is a coordinated effort to turn nearly eight acres of formerly industrial waterfront land into a new public and community asset. The effort that began in 2012 included extensive community outreach, which resulted in the development of the Pier 42 Master Plan. The plan was completed in 2014 and provided a long-term vision for the transformation of the pier. The Pier 42 project is part of the Manhattan Greenway initiative – an initiative that aims to enhance the waterfront connection through the Borough. It envisions a passive space that adds ecological value and habitat, as well as features like lawns and landscaping, a playground, benches, a multipurpose space, and groves of plantings, a designated bike path, shoreline access, and waterfront views.

Melissa Johnson Associates is developing the community and stakeholder outreach strategy for the construction of the Pier 42 project, building off of the the planning and design phase engagement processes, and helping to create a more resilient Lower East Side. During construction, the project team collaborates with local stakeholders to leverage community assets and resources, and to maintain focus on community needs. Through a dedicated community construction liaison, regular attendance at community meetings, website updates, and collaboration with the community, all stakeholders are kept informed of construction activities throughout the duration of the project.
