The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce initiated a wayfinding project to develop pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding signage in downtown Staten Island that increases access to and awareness of attractions, businesses, and activities in the area. A cohesive system of branded signage and streetscape design will visually link three Staten Island neighborhoods: St George, Tompkinsville and Stapelton, encouraging increased patronage and efficient circulation for both locals and visitors. The wayfinding initiative will support the broader effects of the 15 projects that make up the downtown Staten Island Strategic Plan.
Melissa Johnson Associates is managing the public outreach process, which includes identifying stakeholders and managing their needs, concerns, issues and ideas. MJA’s outreach team identifies strengths and weakness, opportunities and challenges of transportation, circulation and wayfinding through a two-way dialogue with stakeholders. The team disseminates project information to engage and inform stakeholders, including elected officials, agencies, organizations, community boards, business owners, residents, visitors and other relevant groups.
MJA has also ensured that all agencies and the project team remain as neutral parties, building credibility and trust with the public as we work together to curate a community-informed wayfinding and placemaking system.
