In 2017, the New York City Department of Transportation initiated the rehabilitation of the Sackett Street bridge over I-278 (the Brooklyn Queens Expressway). The two-span bridge carries one-way westbound traffic and two parking lanes, and serves as a connector between Cobble Hill and the Columbia Street Waterfront District.
For the Sackett Street bridge project, Melissa Johnson Associates provided a dedicated community liaison to work with the local community during bridge construction. On behalf of NYCDOT, the community liaison attended community board meetings, coordinated with elected officials, and notified the public of upcoming impacts on the bridge. MJA was also responsible for interagency coordination, including ensuring NYPD and FDNY were informed on all construction activities. On behalf of NYCDOT, MJA developed project newsletters and issued bulletins and notices to motorists, pedestrians, and residents to inform the community of upcoming impacts.
