Beginning in 2021, New York City launched a ranked-choice voting system for the June Primary, allowing voters to select up to five candidates in order of preference instead of casting a single vote for one candidate. The new voting system was used for the June 22 election for several critical races, including Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough Presidents, and the majority of the City Council seats.
For the Ranked Choice Voting Project Management Initiative run by the DemocracyNYC, a non-partisan initiative of the Mayor's Office, Melissa Johnson Associates managed all voter education outreach efforts, ensuring a coordinated approach across all involved parties and organizations in New York City. The goal of the program was to ensure that all New Yorkers understand the new ranked choice voting system and are able to exercise their right to vote.
MJA managed and coordinated logistics, including scheduling events, identifying partner organizations, coordinating volunteers, facilitating text and phonebanking campaigns, supporting grassroots outreach work, developing and distributing educational materials, troubleshooting staffing issues, and measuring the impact of the campaign. Through a holistic approach, the campaign reached a variety of demographic groups, including historically unengaged groups, and broke through cultural and linguistic barriers. MJA also managed subconsultant Rank the Vote to assist with empowering the ranked choice voting initiative.
