NYSDOT I-81 Viaduct (Contract 2)

The New York State Department of Transportation initiated a design-build project to rehabilitate and reconstruct sections of I-81, a major commuter route through Syracuse. Improvements include the construction of new travel lanes, thirteen bridge replacements, milling and paving existing along sections of highway, concrete and steel repairs, drainage improvements, reconstruction of several ramps and merging lanes, and installation of noise and visual barriers. This extensive project will increase the useable lifespan of the roadways and structures, and improve passenger safety.

Melissa Johnson Associates is responsible for coordinating with the local communities and municipalities surrounding the corridor. The project’s community liaison informs stakeholders of changes taking place during construction, including roadway and lane closures, detours, pedestrian impacts, night work and other community impacts. MJA’s team works with NYSDOT and the design-builder to communicate these impacts in advance to mitigate community concerns or contention. The project team also maintains open lines of communication with the through the project’s dedicated community liaison.
