NYCEDC Design of United Nations Esplanade

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) initiated the design of the United Nations (UN) Esplanade, a greenway initiative located along the East River waterfront, adjacent to FDR Drive from East 41st to 53rd streets. The project, part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, will provide better connections for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and park users who currently use on- street bike lanes. The UN Esplanade project is managed by NYCEDC on behalf of the City of New York, in partnership with NYC Parks and NYCDOT.

Melissa Johnson Associates is responsible for community outreach and stakeholder engagement efforts that actively and meaningfully engage and inform residents, esplanade users, community groups, and municipal leaders. The goal of the engagement program is to allow the project team to understand the public’s input and incorporate their feedback into the design.

Responsibilities of the community outreach program include developing a community engagement plan; developing a stakeholder list; creating a project website; preparing prototypes for use at meetings; organizing materials for pop- up events, information sessions, “walkshops,” stakeholder briefings, and public meetings; identifying and implementing specific outreach to environmental justice communities; and notifying municipal leaders, community organizations, and the public of design-related field activities.
