The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is making accessibility improvements at six stations throughout New York City as part of its long-term commitment to systemwide accessibility. As part of this project, escalators replacements are taking place at 59th Street Station, Lexington Avenue-59th Street Station, 5th Avenue and 53rd Street Station, Smith Street and 9th Street Station, Whitehall Street- South Ferry, and 145th Street.
Melissa Johnson Associates is part of the Project Management Consultant (PMC) team representing the MTA as work progresses at each of these stations. MJA’s staff oversees the design-build team’s outreach program manager, and assists with MTA with engagement to stakeholders, including residents, businesses, community boards, and elected officials. Work includes outreach to MTA customers, and especially to those who rely on escalators to access stations and who need to re-route their commutes within the transit system. The team also oversees notifications to MTA customers regarding points of access and egress at stations as a result of construction, and any general outages as a result of equipment delivery by train. MJA also works with local residents and businesses to communicate local staging and street-level impacts.
