NYCDOT Boston Road Bridge over Bronx River

The New York City Department of Transportation started the design phase for the Rehabilitation of Boston Road Bridge over the Bronx River in 2019. The structure is a concrete arch bridge built in 1920 that serves as a two-lane highway and pedestrian crossing into the Bronx Zoo.

For the design phase of this bridge rehabilitation project, Melissa Johnson Associates’ outreach team is responsible for developing a public outreach strategy for the project, identifying stakeholders and special populations, and serving as a liaison between the project team and the public. Our experts work with the design team during the preliminary design phase to coordinate public outreach tasks related to regulatory approvals. The team is also responsible for designing presentations, brochures, and other informational materials for public meetings. The design outreach team also anticipates and mitigates community issues that could arise during construction, and is responsible for coordination and collaboration with stakeholders during design-related field activities.

DID YOU KNOW?

…that bridges carrying traffic over waterways (such as the Boston Road Bridge) undergo periodic underwater inspections? Trained inspectors assess components of the bridge to identify deficiencies and determine the rate of future deterioration. The results of underwater inspections are used to plan repairs to the bridge structures.
