In 2022, the New York City Department of Transportation initiated the component rehabilitation of eight bridges in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, including the Whitestone Expressway over Belt Cross Island Parkway, Bruckner Expressway over Hutchinson River Parkway, 130th Street Bridge over Belt-Southern Parkway, Belmont Park South Ramp over Belt-Cross Island Parkway, Henry Hudson Parkway over Broadway, Motor Parkway Pedestrian Bridge over Bell Boulevard, 278-I Exit Ramp over Ramp to Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and Eagle Avenue Bridge over East 161st Street. NYCDOT’s component rehabilitation program focuses on repairs to extend a bridge’s service life in between complete bridge replacements. Rehabilitation work impacting these local communities and highways includes joint, steel, and concrete repairs and replacement; electrical repairs; structural deck repairs; sidewalk and railing repairs; milling and paving; painting and striping; lighting improvements; and utility coordination.
Melissa Johnson Associates’ community liaison coordinates with community boards, elected officials, city agencies, schools, businesses, and residents in the neighborhoods surrounding each of the eight bridges being rehabilitated by NYCDOT. Community outreach includes keeping motorists, pedestrians, and local residents aware of changes that may impact their routines, such as detours, lane and sidewalk closures, and construction noise. The community liaison is also responsible for coordination with city agencies, including Amtrak, Metro North, NYPD, and FDNY, to ensure timely completion of work and the safety of commuters and the general public.
