The Red Hook Coastal Resiliency project is an integrated coastal protection system, funded by the City of New York, the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA), and the New York State Department of Emergency and Homeland Security Services (DSHES). The project aims to reduce the risk of coastal flooding, maintain access to the waterfront, improve the long-term resiliency of the neighborhood, and enhance the public realm.
Melissa Johnson Associates assisted with the community and stakeholder outreach strategy for the design phase of the project, building off the planning engagement process, and helping to create a more resilient Red Hook. The engagement strategy was designed based on the demographics and socioeconomics of the local neighborhood, and aims to properly communicate and collaborate with disadvantaged and disengaged communities, including youth, public housing residents, Hispanic and Latino residents, and BIPOC individuals. MJA assisted with the development and facilitation of focus groups as part of the larger community engagement team.
