In 2019, the New York City Department of Transportation initiated the rehabilitation of Arthur Kill Road Bridge over Staten Island Rapid Transit in the Tottenville area of Staten Island. The existing structure is a single-span bridge with a 17-foot clearance. The bridge carries one travel lane in each direction and has two sidewalks. The scope of work includes removing the bridge superstructure, approach slabs, roadways and abutments; repairing the substructure and reconstructing the abutments; installing new bearings and steel framing; constructing a new concrete deck, approach slabs, roadways, sidewalks, curb ramps, guide railings, and pedestrian fencing; and watermain improvements.
Community Outreach
For the Arthur Kill Road bridge project, Melissa Johnson Associates has a dedicated community liaison who began outreach to the local community during the design phase, prior to construction. The liaison coordinated numerous briefings with the community board and elected officials, and presented the project to the local civic association, precinct community council, and community to ensure that the public was aware of upcoming impacts as a result of construction.
On behalf of NYCDOT, Melissa Johnson Associates developed the project’s brochure, numerous presentations to New York City Council, civic associations, NYPD, the community board, and other stakeholders. The community liaison anticipates local impacts to motorists, pedestrians, and residents, and works to inform the community of the project’s next steps, and also responds to community inquiries from a variety of stakeholders. Rehabilitation work on the Arthur Kill Road Bridge, located above the Staten Island Railway, involves heavy coordination with emergency services and with Amtrak to coordinate work during track outages. MJA coordinates with these entities on behalf of the project team to ensure timely completion of the project.
