In 2018, the New York City Department of Transportation initiated the design phase for the Rehabilitation of Kane Street over the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (I-278), a roadway bridge in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood.
Melissa Johnson Associates is an integral part of NYCDOT’s design team, working to identify and mitigate potential community issues that may arise during construction, including impacts to vehicular and pedestrian access, bus service, and parking. The design outreach team is also responsible for coordination with stakeholders, including the community board, local elected officials, and the Public Design Commission, to solicit feedback for the design phase and to obtain regulatory approvals to advance the project through design and into construction.
In collaboration with NYCDOT Community Affairs, Melissa Johnson Associates designs deliverables for stakeholders, including presentations, brochures, and other informational materials. The outreach team is also responsible for communicating design-related construction activities to the local community.
DID YOU KNOW?
Kane Street was known as Harrison Street until 1928 when it was renamed to honor Alderman and Police Sergeant James Kane. An old Harrison Street sign can be found on a brick building at the corner of Kane Street and Cheever Place, near the Kane Street bridge.
