PROJECT INFO
- NAME : NYSDOT Kew Gardens Interchange Improvements Project
- CATEGORY : Community Outreach .
- Work Duration : 2019-2022
The New York State Department of Transportation has initiated a $365 million design-build project to reduce congestion and improve the flow of traffic at the Kew Gardens Interchange. Built in the 1930s and expanded in the 1960s, the Kew Gardens Interchange connects the Grand Central Parkway, Jackie Robinson Parkway, Union Turnpike and Van Wyck Expressway, and provides access to John F. Kennedy Airport and Laguardia Airport. This improvement project addresses roadway deficiencies, improve pedestrian access, and replace several bridge structures, enabling better flow of vehicular traffic.
The last of four projects designed to improve congestion at one of New York's busiest interchanges, the project takes place in a community that has been under construction for more than ten years, and requires a significant amount of community outreach to motorists, residents, and community boards. Melissa Johnson Associates' community liaison maintains close contact with Queens Community Boards 6, 8 and 9, as well as other city agencies, including the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR).
